Steven Berger, Founder and President of Healthcare Insights LLC, specializes in training and consulting and is a renowned healthcare financial management expert. His nearly 30 years experience leads HCI’s initiative to be the premier provider of decision support and management accountability software.
Berger has served as a hospital auditor and hospital/health system finance officer at institutions in New York, New Jersey, Missouri and Illinois. Prior to founding HCI in 2000, he spent seven years as Vice President of Finance at 250-bed Highland Park Hospital in suburban Chicago, Illinois.
A widely recognized course designer and instructor, Berger conceived industry renowned two-day programs in “Fundamentals of Healthcare Financial Management,” “Turning Data into Useful Information” and “Hospital Financial Management for the Non-Financial Manager and The Information Driven Hospital.” He recently served a three-year term of membership on the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA’s) National Board of Examiners. In addition, he has spoken before local, national and international audiences throughout North America, on a variety of healthcare finance related topics.
Berger is a Certified Public Accountant, in addition to his distinction as a Fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, where he recently served as President of the First Illinois Chapter. He is also a Diplomat of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
A successful author, Berger wrote “Fundamentals of Healthcare Financial Management,” a 350-page, second edition financial textbook. In his book, Berger conveys the practitioners’ point-of-view through many years of hands-on management experience. He also co-authored “Introduction to Hospital Accounting, 4th Edition,” published by Kendall Hunt in the summer of 2002 and authored “Understanding Nonprofit Financial Statements, 2nd Edition”, published by Boardsource in 2003.
